Discover Petkeljärvi National park and the entire length of the river Koitajoki until the lake Koitere by paddling. Experience the true silence and versatile nature of North Karelian, Finland.
Petkeljärvi National Park is located in Finland, North Carelia, Ilomantsi. Paddling trail starts from here.You can arrive a day or more earlier to Petkeljärvi, camp there, and you have the option to hike the short hiking routes. The following days you can paddle on your on pace. The route map and instructions include information of the rest places, huts, lent-tos, fire-place, etc. along to route until the end point.
On day 1 and possibly also on day 2 you will be padding next to Petkeljärvi area to the lakes Nuorajärvi and Kasinjärvi. After passing these – which may challenge you if windy – you end up to the more peaceful river Koitajoki. You might spend your first night on one island of Nuorajärvi.
In and around KoitajokiAfter the lakes you will arrive to the longest uniform part of river Koitajoki. Some parts of the river are wide and some narrow. Along your way you may meet and see lot of different kind of birds, and other kind animals. Especially when you reach Kesonsuo area – a special swamp type – in Spring time, you might experience wild bird shows.
In and around KoitereIf wind permits, after Koitajoki river, it is time to head towards lake Koitere. This beautiful lake with hundreds of island offers you silent lake scenery. You might spend the last night in one of the islands, for example in Lammassaari or in smaller islands nearby.
Final morning arises. When you have reached the Koitere, you have couple of options to end your paddling tour. One is to paddle about 15 km through yet one different type of river, namely winding and small river Syväysjoki. This runs through an open swamp zone, and ends up to Käenkoski village boat shore. Another option is to paddle about 9 km to a beautiful camping site with a sand shore along Koitere. We will then pick you up from either of the end points, which we have agreed on the previous evening.
